How to take birth control pills?

I've recently finished my first packet of birth control, had my 7 day break and started my new packet of pills on day 8 as the leaflet guided. The leaflet also states i won't be protected for the first 7 days of taking my pill. Is this only applicable to when you just being taking the pill or does it apply to me now?
