My paddock is dry dirt this time of year with a dusty layer on top?

I worry because I feed my mare in a big oval bucket but she throws a lot of hay out of it and eats it off the dirt. How concerned do I have to be of sand colic? She's been eating like this for a long time but it makes me nervous. What do you think?
